The Artpolis Ensemble, comprised of actors, a director, a playwright, and a choreographer, is the first independent non-governmental resident ensemble in Kosovo, established on February 21, 2021. The Resident Ensemble of Artpolis has created and presented nine professional theatrical performances and various shows both domestically and internationally. This pioneering initiative has set a new standard for independent theater production in the region.
The current members of the Ensemble include director Zana Hoxha, actor and playwright Shpëtim Selmani, as well as actors Blerta Gubetini, Donikë Ahmeti, Edlir Gashi, Labinot Raci, Mikel Markaj, Qëndresa Kajtazi, and Zhaneta Xhemajli. Together, they bring a diverse range of talents and perspectives to the stage, creating a dynamic and versatile group capable of tackling a wide array of themes and narratives.
The shows created and presented by the Artpolis Ensemble include “Totem and Taboo,” “The Haunted Land,” “The Bug,” “Sober,” “Top Girls,” “Fefu and Her Friends,” “Trinity,” the stage reading “Games in the Backyard,” and the performance “Dream a Little Dream.” Currently, the Ensemble is in the process of creating the theater performance “Trojan Women,” which promises to be another compelling addition to their repertoire.
In addition to the Ensemble’s own productions, Artpolis has produced numerous successful performances, significantly enriching the cultural scene in Kosovo. Some of the most significant productions include “Spring Awakening,” “Fragmented,” “The Trojan Women,” a co-production with La Mama, “The Kitchen of Victims,” “Rabbit Hole,” “The Vagina Monologues,” and “The Huntresses of Artemis.” These performances have not only entertained audiences but also sparked important conversations about social and cultural issues.
The impact of Artpolis extends beyond its performances. Through workshops, training programs, and community engagements, the Ensemble has played a crucial role in promoting the arts and supporting emerging artists in Kosovo. By participating in international festivals and collaborations, the Ensemble has created opportunities for cultural exchange and dialogue, further enhancing the global visibility and influence of Kosovo’s artistic community.
